Hey, I'm

Many adults in Mississauga spend years struggling without ever knowing why. If you have always felt like you are working twice as hard as everyone else just to keep up, it may be time to consider an ADHD assessment.

What Does Adult ADHD Actually Look Like?

When most people think of ADHD, they picture a hyperactive child who cannot sit still in class. But adult ADHD looks very different, and that is exactly why it gets missed so often.

In adults, ADHD tends to show up as chronic disorganisation, difficulty managing time, emotional dysregulation, and a persistent sense of underachievement despite genuine effort. It is less about bouncing off the walls and more about feeling like your brain is working against you in the quietest, most exhausting ways.

Top 7 Signs You May Need an ADHD Assessment

Many adults dismiss these signs for years. Here is what to look out for.

1. You Start Things but Rarely Finish Them

Half-finished projects, unanswered emails, and good intentions that never made it to completion. This pattern of starting strong and losing momentum is one of the most consistent signs of ADHD in adults, linked to difficulty sustaining goal-directed behaviour over time.

2. Deadlines Feel Impossible Even When You Plan Ahead

You set reminders, make lists, and tell yourself this time will be different. Many adults with ADHD experience time blindness, operating in two modes: now and not now. Planning ahead feels abstract until urgency forces action.

3. Everyday Tasks Leave You Disproportionately Drained

Replying to an email. Booking an appointment. Tasks that seem minor on paper can feel surprisingly heavy and hard to start. This is not laziness. It is a neurological difficulty with task initiation, one of the core executive functions that ADHD affects.

4. You Are Bright but Your Output Is Inconsistent

Teachers said you had potential but were not applying yourself. Managers have noticed your work is brilliant one week and disorganised the next. This painful gap between ability and output leads many adults to believe they are simply not trying hard enough, when the reality is their brain needs a different kind of support.

5. Your Emotions Feel Intense and Hard to Control

ADHD is not just about attention. Many adults with ADHD experience emotions more intensely and find it harder to regulate them. Small frustrations feel overwhelming and criticism lingers far longer than expected.

This is sometimes referred to as rejection sensitive dysphoria, and it is more common in adults with ADHD than most people realise.

If this resonates, our article on anxiety vs stress may also be helpful as these experiences are often intertwined.

6. Anxiety or Depression Treatment Has Not Worked

If you have already been treated for anxiety or depression without significant improvement, ADHD may be part of the picture.

The two conditions share many overlapping symptoms and are frequently confused. A proper assessment considers the full clinical picture rather than treating symptoms in isolation.

For more on this, take a look at our article on what anxiety is and its types.

7. You Have Always Felt Like Your Brain Works Differently

Many adults with ADHD describe a lifelong sense that their brain simply works differently. They built workarounds and coping strategies that kept them functioning, but the effort required was always far higher than it appeared. If you have carried that quiet sense of being different without ever having a name for it, an assessment can finally provide that clarity.

Why ADHD Gets Missed in Adults, Especially in BIPOC Communities

According to the Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada (CADDAC), approximately 4% of Canadian adults live with ADHD, yet access to accurate diagnosis remains deeply unequal. ADHD is most commonly missed in:

  • Women and girls whose symptoms present differently from the standard diagnostic profile
  • High-achieving adults who developed coping strategies that masked their difficulties
  • People from South Asian and immigrant families where struggles are attributed to laziness or lack of discipline
  • BIPOC communities where seeking an assessment can feel like going against cultural expectations

What an ADHD Assessment in Mississauga Actually Involves

At Inner Voice Therapy, adult ADHD assessments are conducted by Dr. Natasha Ramzan using validated clinical tools including the DIVA-5, the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, and the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale.

The full assessment takes four to five hours across two sessions and includes a 30-minute feedback session and a comprehensive written report delivered within two to three weeks.

No referral is required. You can book directly without needing to go through your GP first.

Following the assessment, clients have the option to continue with eight sessions of executive function coaching to translate findings into practical everyday strategies.

What Happens If ADHD Goes Unassessed

Without the right support, the coping strategies that kept you functioning in your twenties often begin to break down as life demands increase. Relationships suffer. Confidence erodes. The internal narrative of not being good enough becomes harder to shift.

According to the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance (CADDRA), adults with untreated ADHD are at higher risk of workplace difficulties, relationship challenges, and co-occurring mental health conditions. Early assessment is one of the most meaningful steps toward getting the right support.

Conclusion

If you recognise yourself in any of these signs, that recognition is worth taking seriously. Getting an ADHD assessment is not about finding an excuse. It is about finally understanding how your brain works and getting support that actually fits.
